Atlas/Nieuw Ensemble
Collaboration Nieuw Ensemble and Conservatorium van Amsterdam

New works by compositions students from the conservatories of Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam.

This project offers young composers the opportunity to work together with professional musicians during the composition process. The participants can experiment and discuss their sketches and work in progress under the guidance of experienced teachers.
The project focuses on the interaction of cultures. The actively participating students will compose a work for a combination of Western and non-Western instruments.

They can choose one of the following possibilities:
1. inventing a chamber music formation according to their own needs, by choosing from the total list of available musicians, for instance: violin-sho-qanun-guitar or koto-flute-percussion or duduk-english horn-viola da gamba or…
2. writing a piece for the specific line up of ensemble Ziggurat (voice, panflute, duduk/recorder, qanun, percussion, erhu, viola da gamba, double bass)
3. writing a work for non-western instruments and the Nieuw Ensemble.

The practical workshops are combined with a series of informative lectures about non-Western musical traditions and composing for extra European instruments by specialists such as Theo Loevendie, Fabio Nieder, Rokus de Groot, Wim Henderickx and Joël Bons.
